Book review
When you think of October Sky you think of fall leaves and the weather getting colder. You don’t think of rockets, the space race, or a coal mining town. In this thrilling book Homer H. Hickam Jr. recalls of his life growing up in his coal mining town. This book is not for every reader, if you are into books where there is action every second or horror, you probably should look somewhere else for entertainment. This book is for a reader who likes to read about someone going through adversity and coming out on top.
The adversity in this book begins with a boy and the dreams of his parents. Homer lives in a coal mining town where you either grow up and work for the mine, or you go into the military to try to get out. Homer’s dad wants Homer to work in the mine with him, while his mom wants nothing to do with the town and wants him to get out. Homer is stuck in between the two worlds of trying to impress his dad, or trying to fulfill his dream. Homer dreams of getting out of his town and to head down to Cape Canaveral. To do this he creates his own rocket club and learns more than just basic algebra, but to learn more you need to reed the book.
October Sky was a very good read. I was drawn in by Homer and related to him. I like Homer am looking for my destiny. Everybody wants to do something with their life, to leave their mark. Reading about Homer and his life instills a deeper desire to shoot for the stars, and try whatever you can to make your goals and dreams come true. If you want to read a book that tells a true story of making a dream come true, then this is the book for you.
